When purchasing turf, there are many different things to consider. In this article, we are going to educate you on how to select the right turf material for your needs and budget!
Turf Material Types
There are 2 primary types of turf material, Nylon and Poly. Poly turf by nature is softer (more gentle to the touch), however it is not as durable as Nylon. With Poly turf, you should wear turf shoes, but Nylon turf is spike resistant.
We commonly outfit indoor sports facilities with either our 34 oz or 48 oz AgiliTurf, which is a Poly Blend turf option meant for turf shoes. On the other hand, we commonly outfit batting cages with our 30 oz CagePro Nylon, 34 oz FaciliTurf, and 53 oz FaciliTurf. You can’t go wrong with any of our high quality turf options! It’s all about the use and what fits in your budget!
Turf Sizes
Turf roll sizes differ based on the material. For example, the 34 oz AgiliTurf comes in 12’, but all other turf options come in 15’ W. If you are looking to save money or make the installation process easier, a 12’ W roll can make sense!
If you have a 48’ W area you are looking to turf, you would have 12’ W of wasted turf material by doing (4) 15’ W rolls, whereas you would have perfect coverage with (4) 12’ W rolls. Not only would you save money, but you would also avoid having to cut the turf down to a smaller dimension!
Turf can be custom cut to any length between 20’ and 100’, so there is a lot of flexibility in that regard. If you have a space longer than 100’ that needs covered, we recommend cutting the length needed in half and seaming the rolls together in the middle. For example, if I need a 15’ W x 130’ L area turfed, you should order (2) 15’ W x 65’ L rolls of turf!
Turf Grade
There are many different grades of turf, and it is important to know what the differences are when shopping. Turf grades are measured in weights, and the differences are in the material itself and the pile height.
Lower weight turf generally has lower pile heights and the turf fibers themselves are lighter. This doesn’t necessarily mean they are less durable. For example, the 30 oz CagePro Nylon is more durable than the 34 oz AgiliTurf because it is Nylon rather than Poly Blend. However the 34 oz AgiliTurf is less durable than the 48 oz AgiliTurf, because they are the same product with different weights.
